                   Summer Camp Weekly Themes

June 6-10 = Figure It Out
Throughout this week, our children will work in teams to build and design out of Legos, K’nex, and magnets. They will be given challenges each day to build something, such as an animal, building or amusement park, out of a pile of random pieces and will have to work as a team to accomplish their goal.  This camp will allow students to participate in teamwork and help them master the ability to think outside the box and be creative.

June 13-17 = Blowing off Steam
This week, our children will learn about a variety of game rules and explore the mechanics in a number of games that make them interesting to play. They will also learn how games are marketed and be able to determine what the game teaches and whom it is for. Using this knowledge, children will create their own games by selecting a learning goal, developing rules and mechanics, and constructing all pieces necessary to play their games using provided materials. Games that unanimously attract the interest of the children may become a game on our shelves in Playworks

                             June 20-24 = Game Creators
During this camp, children will learn the value of money. The objective is for them to learn how money is earned, saved, and spent wisely. In order to achieve this, the children will play a variety of games such as monopoly. We will use the Dave Ramsey Kit for Kids in order teach them the importance of giving, saving, spending, and earning. In addition, they will create their own piggy bank to encourage them to start saving. The goal is to allow children to take responsibility and independently handle their money.

                           June 27-July 1 = Fun with Magic
Children will engage with the social and physical geography of various locations around the world. They will create their own passport and by the end of the week they will be world travelers that have seen the many cultures that surround us.  Tentatively, each day in the week they will explore the landmarks, culture, music, cuisine and apparel in places such as the Iberian Peninsula, China, Greece, Brazil, and Australia.

                       July 5-8 = Geography Camp
Children will learn about the characteristics and values that make up a super hero. Throughout the week, they will explore different super heroes and create their own. Children will be able to craft their own logo, cape, and decide what qualities their super hero will have. The objective is for them to understand that what makes a super hero is good character, which will encourage them to practice that.

July 11-15 = Top Chef Camp
At the beginning of this camp our children will learn how to set a table and the proper manners and dress to have when eating in public.  They will then learn the basic tools to cook with and the basics of cooking. We will also have a special guest come in and talk to the children about being a chef, the cooking, the apparel, and the equipment. At the end of the week, they will set up a restaurant with a menu and create two meal choices for lunch.

                             July 18-July 22 = Collections
Students will learn about what things you can collect and why people collect. We will also discuss how to organize collections and display them. They will then be given the opportunity to bring a collection to show or to start a collection of their own.

July 23-August 5= Art Camp & First Friday Fun
During these two weeks the children will be doing all kinds of art including 2D, 3D, and even food art. They will learn about all the many forms of art and the basic art components. They will have many pieces of art and by the end of the 2 weeks and Playworks will be hosting a first Friday where they can all present 1 or 2 pieces of their art to the families of Playworks.

                               Aug 8-12 = Fear Factor
In celebration of the Olympics, children will have the opportunity to research the history of the Olympic games and discover a few of the former champions. They will learn what sports are played in the games, and what countries participate in it. At the end of the week, Playworks will host its own Olympic games, where children will be able to participate and win medals.

Aug 15-19 =  Back to School Camp!!
For the final week, children will reflect on what they have learned this summer and think of ways they could use their new skills and knowledge in the future. In preparation of the upcoming school year, they will set a variety of goals they wish to accomplish during the year and note what they wish to learn as well.
